Centre for Virus Research

Viral diseases are a major threat to human and animal health and a burden to the economy. The Medical Research Council (MRC) - University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR) is a unique international research centre with a critical mass of researchers dedicated to the study of human and animal viral diseases.

The mission of the CVR is to carry out multidisciplinary research on viruses and viral diseases of humans and animals, utilising the knowledge gained for the improvement of human and animal health.

The CVR was formally established on 1st April 2010 and is supported through an exciting partnership between the Medical Research Council and the University of Glasgow which have combined resources and expertise to create an international hub for virology research. The Centre is formed by investigators from both the MRC Virology Unit and the University of Glasgow, the Director is Professor Massimo Palmarini.

The Medical Research Council will invest £28 million in CVR over five years and the University of Glasgow will contribute an additional £10m. The CVR will, in due course, be located in a new building on the University's Garscube Campus; in July 2010 it won a £4.8m infrastructure award from the Wellcome Trust and Wolfson Foundation.
